Jigawa state government has approved a revised 2026 budget of N948.210 billion, representing an increase of N46.369 billion over the initial N901.841 billion appropriation.
Mr Sagir Musa, Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sport and Culture, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the weekly executive council meeting on Tuesday in Dutse.
Musa said the increase followed changes in revenue projections and adjustments to capital revenue sources.
He said the review also reflected the reversal of proposed savings from some expenditure lines and the introduction of new priorities requiring government attention.
“The revised budget is designed to align government expenditure with available resources while responding appropriately to emerging revenue realities and critical priority expenditure requirements,” he said.
The commissioner said the revised and proposed supplementary budgets would be forwarded to the Jigawa State House of Assembly for consideration and legislative approval.
He said the review was expected to strengthen implementation of the 2026 fiscal programme and support programmes and projects with significant socio-economic impact.
Musa said the State Executive Council (SEC) also approved a 2026–2031 roadmap for the Jigawa State Learning Poverty-Free Initiative.
According to him, the initiative will make learning outcomes, rather than school access alone, a central measure of progress in the state’s education sector.
He said the council approved a statewide baseline assessment of children’s literacy and numeracy competencies in 2026.
The assessment, he said, would identify geographical, gender and socio-economic disparities and provide evidence for setting targets and allocating resources.
Musa said the council also approved governance arrangements involving relevant ministries, local authorities, development partners and communities throughout the implementation of the initiative.
He said the framework would provide a basis for accountability and transparent tracking of progress through 2031.
The commissioner said the SEC further directed cabinet members to undertake regular field visits across the state’s 27 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
He said the visits would cover local government administration and grassroots projects, including those financed through the Polling Units Development Fund.
According to him, the directive followed the council’s review of the fund’s performance, community reach and socio-economic outcomes across the state.
Musa said cabinet members would assess project progress, resource allocation, project selection and the quality of micro-projects during the field visits.
He said they would also engage local officials, ward development committees, traditional institutions and community leaders during the assessments.
The commissioner said the arrangement was intended to strengthen grassroots accountability and ensure that projects responded to pressing community needs.
Meanwhile, the council paid tribute to the late Emir of Gumel, Alhaji (Dr.) Ahmad Muhammad-Sani II, CON.
Musa said the council described the late monarch as “a strong pillar of unity, a transformational leader, and a dedicated custodian of traditional heritage.”
He said the council extended condolences to the royal family, Gumel Emirate Council and the traditional council of Jigawa.
The commissioner said the council also prayed for the repose of the late emir’s soul, asking Allah to forgive his shortcomings and reward his noble deeds.
