Some people come into our lives as colleagues, but with time, they become much more than that. They become people whose presence leaves an imprint on our hearts and whose character reminds us that humanity still matters.
My first meeting with Peter Onwubuariri was one I would not easily forget. From that very first encounter, I saw in him a sophisticated, confident and remarkably accommodating individual. But beyond the sophistication was something much deeper, a genuine humanity that made it easy to connect with him.
Peter was a man who does not see people through the narrow lens of tribe, background, status or position. He sees people as human beings. His openness and ability to relate with everyone, regardless of where they come from or what position they occupy, are qualities I deeply admire.
In a world where tribal sentiments and social divisions can sometimes influence relationships, Peter stands apart. He builds bridges where others might build walls.
He makes people feel accepted. He gives you the comforting feeling that you matter, not because of what you can offer him, but simply because you are a fellow human being.
But perhaps what touches me most about Peter is his deep concern for the welfare and development of his colleagues.
Peter is not someone who wants to succeed while others are left behind. He carries the struggles, aspirations and concerns of his colleagues with a sincerity that is rare.
There is something deeply beautiful about a person who genuinely wants to see others do well.
Peter’s understanding of relationships is equally remarkable. He values people.
He nurtures connections. He respects the bonds created through work and shared experiences. And in doing so, he reminds us that our professional journey is not only about deadlines, positions, promotions or achievements, it is also about the people we meet and the lives we touch along the way.
Looking back at my first encounter with him and the experiences that followed, I realise that my initial impression was not misplaced. The sophistication I first noticed was only one layer of a much richer personality.
Beneath it is a man with a generous heart, a strong sense of responsibility and a sincere desire to make life better for those around him.
Peter, thank you for being that kind of colleague.
Thank you for caring.
Thank you for standing for others.
Thank you for valuing relationships.
Thank you for crossing tribal and social boundaries with such ease.
And thank you for reminding those around you that success means much more when it is shared.
People may forget some of the things we say or even some of the positions we occupy, but they rarely forget how we made them feel.
And I believe that is one of the greatest things about Peter Onwubuariri: he makes people feel seen, respected and valued.
May life reward your kindness with kindness, your generosity with abundance, and your efforts for others with countless reasons to smile.
It has been a privilege to know you, a pleasure to call you a colleague, and an honour to give you a befitting farewell.
To Peter Onwubuariri, a colleague by profession, a friend by choice, and a brother in humanity, May your gentle soul rest in peace.
