Jigawa State Executive Council has approved the transmission of a proposed Pre-Marital Medical Test Bill, to the Jigawa State House of Assembly, to strengthen preventive healthcare and safeguard public health across the state.
This was revealed by the state Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sport and Culture, Mr Sagir Musa on Tuesday in Dutse, when he addressed newsmen in the outcome of the weekly executive council.
The decision, according to the Commissioner, aligns with the Namadi administration’s commitment to improving health outcomes through proactive and sustainable policies.
“The proposed legislation is designed to address rising concerns related to Sickle Cell Disease, the spread of infectious diseases, and the broader need for early medical intervention.
“It seeks to encourage prospective couples to undergo mandatory medical screening prior to marriage, thereby promoting informed and responsible marital decisions.
“The initiative is expected to facilitate early identification of potential health risks, ensuring that intending couples are fully aware of each other’s medical status before entering into marriage,” he explained.
He further maintained that the decision will help prevent avoidable health complications within families and reduce the long-term burden of hereditary and communicable diseases.
Furthermore, Mr Musa highlighted that early detection remains a critical component in reducing healthcare challenges and improving overall public health indices.
The Bill once passed he stressed, would play a vital role in protecting future generations and strengthening family health systems across Jigawa State.
“The proposed legislation will undergo legislative scrutiny by the State House of Assembly, where it is expected to be debated and, if approved will be enacted into law, as part of the state’s comprehensive healthcare reform agenda.
