A former Minister of Information and ex-Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Labaran Maku, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), promising to mobilise support for the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Maku made the announcement on Tuesday while briefing journalists alongside SDP officials at his residence in Wakama, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area.
He said his decision to join SDP was aimed at contributing positively to the growth of the party both in Nasarawa State and nationally.
“I have joined the SDP to contribute my quota to the success of the party. I will develop the party by God’s grace,” Maku said.
The former minister highlighted his record in employment, empowerment, and infrastructure during his tenure as commissioner, deputy governor, and minister. He assured SDP officials that he would work toward the party’s victory before, during, and after the 2027 elections.
He also paid tribute to the late MKO Abiola and late Senator Godiya Akwashiki, describing his decision to join SDP as a way to honour their legacy.
“Senator Godiya Akwashiki had signature projects across Nasarawa North Senatorial District. I am proud of him because he performed well while representing us in the National Assembly,” Maku said.
Maku added that SDP already enjoys support across the state’s 13 local government areas and expressed confidence that his defection would further strengthen the party’s base. He said he is open to contesting the vacant Nasarawa North senatorial seat following calls from stakeholders in Akwanga, Nasarawa Eggon, and Wamba constituencies, subject to Independent National Electoral Commission approval.
“I am ready to do any assignment given to me by my party and the people of the senatorial district. I will not say no to them,” he said.
Ahead of the 2027 elections, Maku urged state governors not to impose candidates on their successors, stressing the importance of good governance and democratic principles. He also appealed to residents to remain united and embrace peace.
SDP Zonal Chairman in Nasarawa North Senatorial District, Mohammed Audu, welcomed Maku’s defection and assured him of equal rights and privileges within the party.
Meanwhile, in a resignation letter addressed to the PDP chairman of Wakama Electoral Ward, Maku expressed gratitude to his former party for the opportunities he enjoyed. He cited lingering crises within the PDP and the collective desire of his supporters for a new political path as reasons for his exit.
“In line with party guidelines and the Electoral Act, I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the PDP effective from the date of this letter. My exit has become inevitable due to the regrettable crisis that has bedevilled the party and the unanimous calls of our people to chart a new course,” he wrote.
Maku thanked the PDP for its support over the years and pledged to continue upholding common ideals for the good of the people.
