NIQS inaugurates executives, strengthens profession with Kano school

The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, NIQS, has inaugurated the newly elected executive members of its Kano State Chapter and announced plans to establish a training school in the state to strengthen professional capacity in construction and project cost management.

The President of the institute, Associate Professor Aminu Muhammad Bashir, disclosed this during the 11th Investiture, Swearing-in Ceremony and Annual Dinner of the Executive Members of the 2026–2028 Senate of the NIQS Kano State Chapter, themed, “Digitisation, Ethics, and Excellence: Advancing Quantity Surveying Practice for Sustainable Infrastructure Development in Kano State.”

Bashir said the proposed training school would provide specialised training for young professionals to meet the increasing demands of Nigeria’s construction industry.

He said, “We are committed to establishing a training school in Kano to provide professional development in various areas of construction and project cost management. The initiative will create opportunities for young professionals to improve their knowledge and skills and strengthen the profession.”

The NIQS president also commended the Kano State Government for partnering with quantity surveyors in the execution of public projects, noting that the collaboration had enhanced quality, accountability and value for money.

Also speaking, the Kano State Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Engr. Dr. Gaddafi Sani Shehu, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to engaging members of the institute in the delivery of public infrastructure projects.

He said, “The Kano State Government will continue to engage members of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors to handle quantity surveying works in the ministry. We will also sustain our partnership with the institute to promote transparency and quality in government projects.”

Speaking shortly after taking the oath of office as Chairman of the NIQS Kano State Chapter, Alhaji Sa’idu Musa Gyadi-Gyadi pledged to advance the profession through advocacy and public enlightenment.

According to him, the new executive will embark on awareness campaigns in schools and across media platforms to encourage more young people to study Quantity Surveying.

“We will sensitise young people on the importance of studying Quantity Surveying and intensify awareness through the media and advocacy visits to schools to attract more people into the profession,” Gyadi-Gyadi said.

He also appreciated Mangal Cement and AMKAR General Merchandise Limited for supporting the investiture ceremony.

In separate goodwill messages, a former Chairman of the NIQS Kano State Chapter and Fellow of the institute, Alhaji Muhammad Bala Dakata, alongside Auwal Sani Shehu, urged members to uphold the ethics, integrity and professionalism of the quantity surveying profession.

The newly inaugurated executive is headed by Sa’idu Musa Gyadi-Gyadi as Chairman, with Bashir M.T. Hotoro as Deputy Chairman and Dr. Garba Mai Unguwa Umar as Secretary.

Other members include Gambo Ya’u Idris as Assistant Secretary, Dr. Baffa Yahaya Sabi’u as Treasurer, Aminu Wada Hussein as Research Secretary, Bello Abdu Gaya as Financial Secretary and Yusuf Abdulsalam Daho as Public Relations Officer.

Also inaugurated were Auwal Abdu Dankano as Ex-Officio I and Rabiu Hamza as Ex-Officio II, while Muhammad Habib Umar, Maryam Hamidu, Salisu Ahmed Baba, Emmanuel Ishaku Bature and Ahmad Mudi Guda were named co-opted members.

Highlights of the event included the presentation of certificates of appointment to the newly elected executive members and awards to past chairmen of the institute in recognition of their contributions to the development of the quantity surveying profession in Kano State.
