Bayero University, Kano (BUK) is set to enter a strategic partnership with Green Way Agrotech Limited to introduce hybrid rice varieties and expand maize, groundnut, and other crop production, in a move aimed at boosting food security in Nigeria.
The proposed collaboration emerged during a courtesy visit by the Green Way Agrotech delegation to BUK Vice-Chancellor, Professor Haruna Musa, at his office on Friday.
The company outlined plans to train agriculture students on modern crop varieties, mechanisation, and technology, while also offering internships and scholarship opportunities.
The delegation was led by the Managing Director of Green Way Agrotech, Peter Fonk, alongside Professor Mohammed Maina and Professor Sanusi Gaya Muhammed, Director of BUK’s Centre for Dryland Agriculture.
Speaking on the visit, Mr. Fonk said, “The purpose of our visit is to formally introduce Green Way Agrotech to the university leadership and share our mission and vision in Nigeria. We are committed to supporting Nigeria’s drive toward agricultural self-sufficiency within the next three to five years, and we aim to position the country as an export hub for agricultural products in the next decade.”
He added, “We believe that by working with BUK, the university can train a large number of students in the Faculty of Agriculture. We also plan to introduce internship-based programmes and offer significant scholarships to encourage young people to venture into farming.”
According to Mr. Fonk, key areas of the proposed partnership include agricultural extension services and training, technology transfer, research, sustainable agricultural practices, and value chain development.
Responding, Prof. Musa described the initiative as “timely and highly relevant,” particularly in advancing value addition and expanding opportunities for students.
“BUK is ready to collaborate with Green Way Agrotech Limited and other stakeholders to ensure the success of this partnership,” he said, highlighting the university’s recent achievements in agricultural research.
