Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, alongside former APC national chairman Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on Tuesday attended plenary at the National Assembly in Abuja, where they witnessed the formal defection of eight members of the House of Representatives from the state to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
According to the statement, the lawmakers defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) during plenary presided over by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas.
“The defection was announced on the floor of the House during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas,” the statement said.
It added that in separate letters read during the session, the lawmakers cited the lingering internal crisis within the NNPP as the reason for their decision to defect.
The plenary was attended by prominent political figures, including former governor of the state Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin, and other party leaders and stakeholders.
Governor Yusuf, according to the statement, described the development as part of the democratic process, noting that political realignments are not unusual in a vibrant democracy.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to governance, stressing that political differences would not hinder the delivery of democratic dividends to the people of Kano State.
“He emphasized the need for unity and cooperation among elected representatives for the overall development of the state,” the statement added.
