Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency(JISEMA), has issued a public warning to residents across the state, alerting them to a high risk of flooding, during several months of the year and called for immediate precautionary measures to safeguard lives and property.
In a statement released by the Executive Secretary of the agency, Hannafi Yakubu Fagam, the state has been marked among flood-prone regions based on national seasonal forecasts, with varying levels of risk expected between April and November.
According to the agency, the first phase of potential flooding will occur between April and June, and will affect local government areas like Guri, KiriKasamma, Hadejia, Auyo, Miga, Ringim, Kaugama, Kazaure, Dutse, Birnin Kudu, Gwaram, Gantsa, and Malammadori.
The warning revealed that between July and September, additional areas such as Taura and Birniwa are expected to experience significant flooding alongside previously listed locations.
For the months of October and November, the agency identified Ringim, Miga, Auyo, Hadejia, Guri, and Malammadori as areas likely to remain vulnerable.
SEMA further emphasized that residents must take proactive steps to minimize risks. These include regular clearing of drainage systems and waterways, proper waste disposal to prevent blockage of drains, and avoiding construction or habitation in flood-prone zones.
The agency also advised households to prepare emergency supplies such as food, clean water, medications, and lighting, while ensuring children are kept away from flood waters and open drainage channels.
“Residents are strongly encouraged to heed weather advisories and official instructions at all times,” the statement noted, adding that communities should identify safe shelters in advance and disconnect electricity if floodwaters begin to enter homes.
The agency howerver, urged the public to promptly report early signs of flooding or emergencies to relevant authorities to enable swift response.
The warning comes amid increasing concerns over seasonal flooding in Nigeria, which has in recent years caused widespread displacement, destruction of farmland, and loss of lives in several states.
SEMA reaffirmed its commitment to continuous public sensitization and emergency preparedness, calling on citizens to remain vigilant and cooperative in order to mitigate the impact of potential floods.
