The Kano State House of Assembly has resumed its legislative activities and formally withdrawn impeachment proceedings against former Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, following his resignation from office.
The decision was announced during Tuesday’s plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Ismail Falgore, who also read Gwarzo’s resignation letter to lawmakers. The letter, dated March 27, 2026, cited Section 306(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) as the basis for his voluntary exit from office.
“I, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, Deputy Governor of Kano State, hereby tender my voluntary resignation from office, effective 27 March 2026,” the letter stated in part.
Speaking to journalists, the Majority Leader of the House, Lawal Hussain Dala, explained that the impeachment process was discontinued due to the resignation. He added that any allegations against the former deputy governor would now be handled by relevant anti-corruption agencies.
“We are not the EFCC or ICPC; we discharge our responsibilities as a legislative body,” Dala said.
In a related development, a lawmaker representing Kiru Constituency announced his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), effective March 29, 2026. He attributed the move to internal crises within the NNPP and consultations with his constituents.
Meanwhile, the Assembly also received the audited accounts of local governments in the state for the year ending December 31, 2024. The Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Tukur Muhammad Fagge, commended members for their support in compiling the report.
Additionally, a bill seeking to establish the Minjibir College of Education and Legal Studies was introduced on the floor of the House. The motion was sponsored by Abdulhamid Abdul Minjibir, Chairman of the Committee on Higher Education, who said the proposed institution would serve the educational needs of the region and help reduce congestion in Kano metropolis.
In his remarks marking the resumption after a four-week Sallah recess, Speaker Falgore congratulated the people of Kano State and Governor Abba Yusuf on the successful completion of Ramadan and the Eid-el-Fitr celebration. He urged residents to uphold the values of unity, peaceful coexistence, and development.
