Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has directed the Kano State Ministry of Water Resources to immediately regulate the activities of sand miners operating around water treatment plants across the state.
The directive was disclosed in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mustapha Muhammad, following an inspection visit to the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant as part of the governor’s statewide tour of water facilities.
According to the statement, “the governor gave the directive today while on inspection visit at the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant as part of his statewide tour of water treatment plants.”
Muhammad noted that the move is part of the administration’s effort to safeguard critical water infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted supply of potable water to residents.
“The directive is part of efforts by Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration to safeguard critical water infrastructure and prevent any form of disruption to the effective production and supply of potable water to residents,” the statement added.
Governor Yusuf warned that unregulated sand mining poses a significant threat to water facilities, stressing that it could undermine government investments in the sector.
He said, “unchecked sand mining activities pose a serious threat to the functionality of water treatment facilities, potentially undermining government investments aimed at ensuring sustainable access to clean and safe drinking water.”
The governor further emphasised the need for strict monitoring and enforcement of regulations to protect water sources and treatment processes from degradation.
He assured residents of his administration’s commitment to improving water supply across the state, calling on stakeholders to support government efforts in protecting critical public utilities.
“Governor Abba Yusuf assured of sustained commitment to improving water supply across Kano State, calling on all relevant stakeholders to cooperate with the government in protecting vital public utilities for the benefit of all,” the statement said.
