The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Reverend Alfred Adewale Martins, has expressed deep sorrow over the recent Palm Sunday attack in Plateau State, describing the killing of innocent citizens as heart-rending.
In an Easter message issued through the Director of Communications of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Very Rev Fr Anthony Godonu, Archbishop Martins extended condolences to the families of the victims and condemned the persistent insecurity across the country.
“On a sad note, my heart reaches out to the victims of the recent terrorist attacks that occurred in Angwan Rukuba in the city of Jos on Palm Sunday, which claimed the lives of over 27 innocent Nigerians. It is very disheartening that the perpetrators chose to strike on a day sacred to followers of Christ,” he said.
The Archbishop criticised the government for failing to protect citizens, stressing that the repeated attacks highlight a deepening insecurity despite assurances and substantial funds allocated to security.
“It is unfortunate that the government has consistently abdicated its responsibility for securing the lives and properties of Nigerians. This situation underscores the need for citizens to remain vigilant and prepared to protect themselves and their loved ones,” he added.
Archbishop Martins also called on leaders at all levels to prioritise human lives over politics, saying, “The policies and actions of those in power should place the welfare, security, and dignity of every Nigerian above partisan interests or personal ambition. Political manoeuvring must not delay essential security, economic relief, or national unity.”
He further criticised the recent surge in petroleum and diesel prices, describing it as an indication of misaligned economic priorities that worsen hardships for ordinary Nigerians.
The Archbishop urged leaders to emulate the sacrificial leadership of Christ, using their positions to end the reign of terror and improve citizens’ welfare. “Failure to act responsibly should compel those in power to resign and allow competent hands to take over,” he said.
He also reminded Nigerians of the importance of participating in upcoming elections, emphasizing the need to choose leaders who will serve with honesty, sincerity, and fear of God.
“Let us not succumb to despair or allow our diversity to be weaponised against us. We must be agents of reconciliation and peace, extending grace and compassion to our neighbours,” he concluded.
