The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has resigned her appointment from the cabinet of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Onyejeocha’s exit makes her the third cabinet member to step down following a presidential directive mandating all appointees with 2027 elective ambitions to vacate their offices.
The former lawmaker announced her resignation on Friday via a letter shared on her official social media handles, coming three days after the March 31 deadline set by the President.
In her resignation letter, Onyejeocha expressed her gratitude to President Tinubu, members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), and Nigerians for the opportunity to serve the nation.
> “This period marks the end of a significant chapter in my journey of service as I formally resign as Honourable Minister of State for Labour and Employment,” she stated.

Reflecting on her tenure, she described her time in the ministry as a privilege, thanking the President for the confidence reposed in her. She further commended the staff of the ministry for their “dedication, professionalism, and partnership,” noting that their collective efforts helped strengthen workers’ rights and enhance workplace safety.
Onyejeocha, who previously represented the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State in the House of Representatives between 2007 and 2023, also extended appreciation to her constituents for their long-standing support.
“As one chapter closes, another opens. I remain committed to service, to progress, and to building the Nigeria we all deserve,” she added.
While her resignation is tied to the 2027 elective office directive, the former Minister did not specify the particular position she intends to contest.
Her exit follows the earlier resignations of the Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali, who is eyeing the Gombe State governorship seat, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, who is expected to join the governorship race in Bauchi State.
