Jigawa State Rapid Response Team from the Public Health Department of the Ministry of Health, visited Babura General Hospital on Wednesdsy, to investigate a suspected case of Lassa fever.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Information Officer of Babura local government area of Jigawa, Mr Sulaiman Daudu on Thursday.
It said that the team was at the local government to put in place preventive measures to stop further transmission of the disease in the area.
The statement revealed that Dr Sabiu Aliyu from the World Health Organisation (WHO), who led the team to the area confirmed the case.
In the statement, Dr Aliyu said the deceased was a resident of Gari Uku village in Babura Local Government Area.
The patient, according to Aliyu, was admitted at Babura general hospital with symptoms of Lassa fever and was later referred to Reshid Shekoni Teaching Hospital Dutse, where laboratory tests confirmed the disease.
Dr. Aliyu added that investigations revealed that the deceased, Habibu Haruna, had recently travelled to Saminaka, Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
To curtail the disease, Aliyu revealed that essential drugs and personal protective equipment (PPE), had been supplied to Babura General Hospital, while contact tracing and surveillance had commenced.
He further noted that members of the community where the deceased came from, as well as the health personnel who handled the case, are currently under surveillance throughout the incubation period.
