Jigawa State Gov. Umar Namadi, has inaugurated a new ultra-modern central medical store in Dutse, Jigawa state capital, to strengthen health systems in the state.
In his remarks at the ceremony, Namadi said the project represents a historic achievement for the state, adding that it will provide significant benefits to the entire state population.
He explained that the Central Medical Store was the product of years of consultation and collaboration between the Jigawa State, Federal Ministry of Health, the Global Fund, and UNICEF.
“It was implemented under the National Supply Chain Policy for Pharmaceuticals and related products and the partnership mobilised about ₦1.4 billion for the successful delivery of the project,” he said.
He further noted that weaknesses in Nigeria’s pharmaceutical supply chain, such as poor infrastructure, weak coordination, stock-outs, expiries, and wastages, have long affected healthcare delivery.
“The new facility, is strategically positioned to address these challenges, through a harmonized and responsive management system.
“The management system that will enhance efficiency, accountability, safety, and optimal service delivery, in line with the National Health Policy and the goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage,” Namadi explained.
Furthermore, he directed the State Ministry of Health, to ensure that all health programmes and implementing partners, move their pharmaceuticals with immediate effect, to the central medical store, to guarantee quality, potency, and safety.
The governor however, expressed appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Health, the Global Fund, and other partners for their sustained support.
Earlier, in his remarks the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Muhammad Kainuwa, described the facility as the first state-built Central Medical Store.
“The project will eliminate the need for renting private warehouses, thus reducing exposure to theft and losses, and ensuring proper storage and distribution of medicines across health facilities,” he revealed.
He added that the store is one of the largest pharmaceutical facilities in the country, with capacity for about 25,000 pallets, multiple cold rooms, modern warehouse equipment, IT systems, fire safety infrastructure, and dedicated cold-chain vehicles.
